Biostimulators vs Skin Boosters: Radiesse, Sunekos and Belotero Revive Explained

If you've been looking into ways to improve your skin quality without adding volume or changing your features, you've probably come across the words "biostimulator" and "skin booster" - sometimes used interchangeably, sometimes not. It's confusing, and I get why.

At Skin Poet, Browns Bay, I offer three injectable treatments in this space: Radiesse, Sunekos, and Belotero Revive. They all work beneath the surface of the skin, but they do very different things. Choosing the right one depends entirely on what your skin actually needs.

Here's my honest breakdown of each one.

The short answer: Radiesse rebuilds structure and firms sagging skin. Sunekos regenerates the extracellular matrix and is exceptional for delicate areas like under the eyes. Belotero Revive deeply hydrates and is the best starting point for skin that looks tired or sun-damaged. Most clients end up combining two of them.

Radiesse: The structural rebuilder

Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres - a biocompatible mineral compound that naturally occurs in human bones and teeth. When injected, it works in two phases.

Phase one is immediate. The gel carrier provides instant structure and firmness at the injection site.

Phase two is where the real magic happens. Over the following weeks and months, the CaHA microspheres create a physical scaffold in the dermis that stimulates your fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. Research shows Radiesse can boost collagen production up to 23x and increase elastin by 96%. As the gel gradually absorbs, your own tissue takes its place.

What Radiesse is best for

  • Visible laxity and loss of firmness in the lower face, jawline, and neck

  • Skin that has lost its structural support and looks deflated rather than just dehydrated

  • Clients who want longer-lasting results (up to 2 years with maintenance)

  • Body areas including the décolletage and hands, when used in a hyperdilute technique

What to expect

  • Sessions: 1-2, depending on treatment area

  • Results visible: Immediately (structure), with collagen building over 2-6 months

  • Duration: 12-18 months, up to 2 years

  • Downtime: Minimal. Some swelling and bruising possible

Radiesse is not the right choice if your skin's main concern is dehydration, fine crepey lines around the eyes, or you're new to injectables and want to start gently. It's a more advanced treatment suited to clients with established laxity.

At Skin Poet, we use Radiesse hyperdiluted, not neat. This increases the safety profile and works in a regenerative manner rather than as a filler. Sunekos: The extracellular matrix regenerator

Sunekos combines hyaluronic acid with a patented blend of six amino acids: glycine, L-proline, L-leucine, L-lysine, L-valine, and L-alanine. These amino acids are the literal building blocks your fibroblasts need to synthesise new collagen and elastin.

The idea is elegant: instead of just stimulating your skin cells and hoping they have the raw materials to respond, Sunekos delivers both the signal and the ingredients. Your fibroblasts get fed exactly what they need to rebuild the extracellular matrix from within.

This makes Sunekos particularly effective for areas where the skin is thin, fragile, or crepey - places where other treatments can feel too heavy-handed.

What Sunekos is best for

  • The under-eye area (periorbital) - one of its strongest applications and my personal fave

  • Thin, crepey skin on the neck and décolletage

  • Fine lines around the mouth and lips - a bit stingy but worth it!

  • Clients who want gradual, natural-looking regeneration without any structural change - think regenerative and hydrating

  • Preventative treatment for clients in their 30s noticing early skin quality decline

What to expect

  • Sessions: 3-4 sessions, spaced 1-2 weeks apart

  • Results visible: From 2-3 weeks after starting the course

  • Duration: 4-6 months, maintenance every 6 months

  • Downtime: Minimal. Small bumps settle within 24 hours

The course structure is more intensive than Radiesse, but the per-session product volume is smaller and the treatment is well-tolerated even in sensitive areas. I often use Sunekos under the eyes in combination with Radiesse on the lower face - they complement each other well because they treat different problems.

Belotero Revive: the deep hydrator

Belotero Revive is the only injectable on the New Zealand market that combines hyaluronic acid with glycerol. Glycerol is a powerful humectant - it actively draws water into the skin and holds it there, creating a lasting moisturising effect that goes well beyond what topical skincare can achieve. Think glass skin via injection!

It's specifically indicated for early-onset sun damage, which accounts for approximately 90% of visible skin ageing. If your skin looks dull, flat, or tired rather than structurally lax, this is often the place to start. It is particularly good for rosacea too.

Unlike the biostimulators above, Revive isn't asking your skin to produce anything new. It's delivering hydration and radiance directly, which means results come through faster and feel more immediate. It can be used as a ‘once-off’ pre-event treatment or in a package to make some more distinct skin changes.

What Belotero Revive is best for

  • Dull, dehydrated skin that lacks glow and elasticity

  • Early signs of sun damage and fine surface lines

  • Clients new to injectables who want a gentle, natural-looking introduction

  • Skin that looks tired and flat but hasn't yet developed significant laxity

  • Combining with fillers or Radiesse for a "lit from within" finish

What to expect

  • Sessions: 3 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart

  • Results visible: Within 2-3 weeks; 100% of patients showed improvement at week 12

  • Duration: 6-9 months, maintenance every 6 months

  • Downtime: Minimal. Small bumps settle within a few hours, possible bruising

I think of Revive as the foundation layer. It makes everything else work better - your skin is more receptive to biostimulation when it's properly hydrated, and the results from Radiesse or Sunekos look more luminous when Revive is part of the plan.

How Do They Compare?

Here's a side-by-side breakdown of all three treatments.

Which one is right for you?

Choose Radiesse if your skin has lost firmness and structure, particularly around the jawline and lower face, and you want longer-lasting results with fewer sessions.

Choose Sunekos if you're concerned about thin, crepey skin — especially around the eyes, neck, or mouth — and want a course of treatment that rebuilds from within.

Choose Belotero Revive if your skin looks dull, dehydrated, or sun-damaged, you're new to injectables, or you want to add a hydration layer on top of your existing treatment plan.

Choose a combination if (like most of my clients) you have more than one concern. These treatments work in different layers and on different problems, so combining them isn't doubling up — it's treating your skin more completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are biostimulators the same as dermal fillers?

No. Dermal fillers add volume by placing a substance (usually hyaluronic acid) under the skin that stays there. Biostimulators like Radiesse and Sunekos work by prompting your skin to produce its own collagen and elastin. The distinction matters because the goal, the result, and the timeline are all different. How long does it take to see results from biostimulators?

It depends on the treatment. Radiesse provides some immediate structural improvement, with collagen building over 2-6 months. Sunekos results begin to show from 2-3 weeks into the course. Belotero Revive is the fastest — most clients notice improved hydration and glow within 2-3 weeks of their first session. None of these are instant transformations; they're gradual, natural-looking improvements.

Can I have Radiesse, Sunekos, and Belotero Revive at the same time?

Yes, they can be combined safely. In fact, combining them often produces better results than any single treatment alone. The key is planning the protocol correctly — which is exactly what we work out together in a consultation at Skin Poet.

Is there downtime after these treatments?

Minimal. You may have small bumps at injection points, some redness, and occasional bruising. Sunekos and Revive settle within a few hours to 24 hours. Radiesse via cannula can bruise at the injection point, but shouldn’t last more than a few days. Most clients return to normal activities the same day.

How do I know which treatment is right for my skin?

The honest answer is: come in for a consultation. I assess your skin in person, discuss what's bothering you, and build a plan that makes sense for your skin, your budget, and your timeline. There's no pressure and no one-size-fits-all protocol here.
